USPS Goes Postal

Breaking news… or is it?

The US Postal Service has announced it will discontinue Saturday mail service starting August 1st.  Boy, didn’t see that one coming.  In today’s era of immediate email, instant messaging, sms, and (if you want to go old school) a cell to cell phone call – is the postal service even relevant any more?

Letter Carrier Delivering Mail

Don’t get me wrong.  Receiving a letter in the mail is one of the most joyous and oddly exhilarating events in my day.  (It’s about like this.)  Even if the letter is simply a note from the parents reminding me to send Grandma a birthday card (thanks Mom & Dad! you could have emailed me.) I’m still overjoyed at the sight of a hand addressed envelope.  Yet, most of my mail is wasteful useless junk.  Even the magazines I ‘accidentally’ subscribed to because it was a Groupon and ‘how could I not when you’re saving 97.6% off the cover price?’, seem like a waste of paper when I can easily read most of the articles online or via tablet anyway.

Is the day coming when the Postal Service will be obsolete?  How much are stamps now anyway, 95 cents?  Does it not seem archaic (and frankly, extremely cheap) that for less than the cost of a bus fare across town we can pay someone to HAND DELIVER an envelope across the entire country?  In my opinion, higher postage rates and limited service are inevitable.

At what point will technology dominate and ultimately eliminate door to door mail service?
